Ingredients

  • Broken Wheat (Gothambu Nurukku): 1 cup
  • Carrot: 1 small, chopped
  • Beans: 5, chopped
  • Ginger: 1 tsp, crushed
  • Green Chili: 1, chopped
  • Curry Leaves: 1 sprig
  • Dry Red Chili: 2
  • Big Onion: 1 small, chopped finely
  • Salt: to taste
  • Water: 3 cups
  • Mustard Seeds: ½ tsp
  • Urad Dal: ¼ tsp
  • Vegetable Oil: 1 tbsp

Method

  1. Prepare the Broken Wheat:
    • Thoroughly wash the broken wheat 3-4 times.
    • Soak it in hot water for 30 minutes.
    • Add the soaked wheat to a pressure cooker along with 3 cups of water and salt.
    • Cook on medium flame for 3 whistles. Once done, allow the pressure to release naturally.
  2. Prepare the Tempering:
    • Heat oil in a pan and splutter mustard seeds.
    • Add dry red chilies and urad dal, frying them one by one.
  3. Saute the Vegetables:
    • Add crushed ginger, salt, chopped onion, green chili, and curry leaves to the pan.
    • Saute for 1 minute.
    • Add chopped carrot and beans, and continue to saute for 2 minutes on medium flame.
  4. Combine and Cook:
    • Add the cooked broken wheat to the pan with the vegetables.
    • Mix well, check the salt, and cook for an additional 5 minutes on low flame, stirring occasionally.
    • Optionally, sprinkle 1 tsp of sugar for a slight sweetness.
  5. Serve:
    • Let it sit for 10 minutes before serving.
    • Serve hot with banana, chutney, or any curry of your choice.
